La photographie permet d’immortaliser l’éphémère et d’en restituer non pas sa réalité mais une interprétation de celle-ci. Dès sa naissance ce médium ne s’est pas réduit à sa fonction technique de " restitution objective du réel". On ne saisit jamais la réalité que par des moyens qui en déterminent son apparition. Au delà de témoigner du visible, la photographie donne à saisir de manière sans cesse renouvelée un point de vue singulier et inédit. Le « champ-contrechamp » est une ressource narrative puissante qui détermine une image. La photographie cite le réel sans jamais l’épuiser.

« Mais qui est donc cette dame avec son appareil photo à la première rangée ? » La Reine Élisabeth avait déjà remarqué Germaine Van Parys (BE, 1893-1983) au début des années 1920. L'attention royale a immédiatement donné un coup d'accélérateur à la carrière de photographe de Van Parys.
L'agence de presse Van Parys Media continue de faire autorité dans le paysage médiatique. Les images d'archive de la photographe bruxelloise obstinée recèlent un trésor d'informations historiques et de perles visuelles.
La mémoire de la Belgique en exposition
Ensemble, l’œuvre des deux photographes couvre une période impressionnante de l’histoire belge – de 1918 à 1998. En 2013, Germaine Van Parys sera donc mise à l’honneur 120 ans après sa naissance, tout comme sa filleule, Odette Dereze, qui a suivi ses traces.
